In a tragic turn of events in September 2018, a 48-year-old woman named Stacy Rountree lost her life. The incident unfolded in Centereach, New York, where she was discovered in a parked car with a gunshot wound. Alongside her was Erick Horton, also 48, who authorities identified as the man who shot her before turning the gun on himself. Both Rountree and Horton were residents of Coram.
The grim discovery was made on a Tuesday night in a Kia Soul parked in the driveway of a residence on North Washington Avenue. It was later determined that neither Rountree nor Horton had any connection to the house where the vehicle was found. Emergency services were called to the scene, and both individuals were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Erick Horton succumbed to his self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the hospital on the Wednesday following the shooting. Stacy Rountree fought for her life for several more days but ultimately passed away from her injuries on Friday. Investigators from the Suffolk County Police Department concluded that the case was a murder-suicide, with Horton being the sole suspect in Rountree's death. A handgun was recovered from inside the vehicle.
