In the late afternoon of September 17, 2018, tragedy struck in the Boerum Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn when 26-year-old Kenneth Ballou was fatally shot. The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. outside the Gowanus Houses at 187 Hoyt Street, a residence Ballou called home. Responding to a 911 call, police officers discovered Ballou on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
He was rushed to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Kenneth Ballou led police to seek three male suspects for questioning. Two of the men are believed to be between the ages of 21 and 25. One of these younger suspects was last seen wearing a multi-colored sleeveless shirt, black shorts, and red and white sneakers. The third suspect is described as being in his 30s, approximately 6 feet tall, with a beard and braided hair.
In the days following the shooting, the New York Police Department released surveillance photos of two individuals identified as persons of interest in the case. Despite the ongoing investigation and the identification of potential suspects, no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting. The motive for the shooting remains unclear as the investigation continues. The Gowanus Houses apartment complex where the shooting took place has been noted for a history of violence and gang activity.
