In the late afternoon of September 17, 2018, tragedy struck in the Boerum Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn when 26-year-old Kenneth Ballou was fatally shot. The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. outside the Gowanus Houses at 187 Hoyt Street, a residence Ballou called home. Responding to a 911 call, police officers discovered Ballou on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He was rushed to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
