On an autumn evening in Queens, New York, a promising young life was tragically cut short. Fourteen-year-old Aamir Griffin, a high school freshman, was on the basketball court at the Baisley Park Houses on October 26, 2019, practicing his jump shot, a pastime he loved. Moments later, gunshots rang out, and Aamir was struck by a stray bullet in his upper chest, piercing both of his lungs. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting was a case of mistaken identity in a feud between rival street gangs.
The investigation into the senseless killing led authorities to Sean Brown, a reputed member of the Money World gang. Investigators determined that Brown had mistaken Aamir for a member of a rival gang he was targeting. Surveillance footage captured Brown fleeing the scene after the shooting and later allegedly telling others, 'I seen that n—, I hit him. That n—- drop.” Brown was arrested and in September 2021, a Queens County grand jury indicted him on charges of murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.
Initially, in January 2024, Sean Brown rejected a plea deal that would have sentenced him to 30 years in prison, opting to go to trial instead. However, he later changed his mind and pleaded guilty to manslaughter and conspiracy to commit murder. In April 2024, a judge sentenced Brown to 30 years in prison for his role in the death of Aamir Griffin and an unrelated weapon possession charge. The tragic death of the young student and athlete was a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gang violence, leaving his family and community to mourn the loss of a life full of potential.
