In the early hours of July 5, 2020, a tragic event unfolded on Atkins Avenue in the East New York section of Brooklyn, forever altering the lives of a local family. Jose Cepeda, a 20-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot in front of his home shortly before 12:45 a.m. His death marked the beginning of a particularly violent period in New York City.
