In the early morning hours of August 16, 2020, a gathering in a Westbury, New York parking lot turned deadly, claiming the life of 27-year-old Alexis Gonzalez-Sanchez of Melville. Gonzalez-Sanchez, a man remembered by his family as fun, outgoing, and incredibly kind, was found with a gunshot wound in the parking lot on Union Avenue around 1:05 a.m. The location was reportedly near a house party.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led Nassau County police to a 16-year-old from Hempstead named Junior Maldonado. He was arrested in September 2020 in connection with the fatal shooting. The incident that led to the tragic outcome reportedly stemmed from an argument over beer at the party, which was attended by about 40 people. A group that included Maldonado, who were uninvited, arrived and multiple fights broke out between the groups.
Junior Maldonado faced legal proceedings for his role in the death of Alexis Gonzalez-Sanchez. Although no witnesses saw Maldonado fire the fatal shots, several testified to seeing him with a gun, and one witnessed him firing a warning shot. Following a trial, Maldonado was convicted of manslaughter and illegal gun possession. His initial murder conviction in March 2023 was set aside due to a prosecutorial error, leading to a second trial where he was found guilty of the lesser charge. Gonzalez-Sanchez, who had moved to Westbury from Mexico at the age of three and graduated from Westbury High School, was described as having aspirations of becoming a designer and was deeply loved by his family.
