In the early evening of October 5, 2015, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a New Cassel neighborhood, leaving a local man dead and a community searching for answers. Gomez Hurd, a 31-year-old male, was pronounced deceased at a local hospital shortly after the incident. The shooting occurred at approximately 6:16 p.m. in front of a business on Prospect Avenue.
Responding to a 911 call, Nassau County police officers discovered Hurd suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to Nassau University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:42 p.m. An employee of a nearby restaurant later recounted seeing Hurd sitting on a bench when four young individuals approached him just before the fatal shots were fired.
