In the fall of 2022, a promising young life was tragically cut short in a Brooklyn apartment building. Raelynn Cameron, a 17-year-old female, was fatally shot on the evening of October 10th. A recent graduate of the Brooklyn High School of the Performing Arts, she was a freshman at Medgar Evers College with aspirations of majoring in business and minoring in dance.
Those who knew her described her as a bright, beautiful, and talented individual who was actively involved in her church and community. She was just days away from her 18th birthday.
On that fatal night, Raelynn was with an adopted cousin and some friends inside an apartment on Eldert Lane in East New York. The initial reports to police suggested the shooting was accidental. However, Raelynn's mother, Cassandra Adams, insisted that her daughter was murdered. According to a witness who came forward, another individual at the gathering had made unwanted sexual advances towards Raelynn. When she rejected him, he shot her in the chest. After the shooting, two men were seen on video carrying her body from the apartment and leaving her in the lobby. Emergency services were called, and Raelynn was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation quickly shifted from an accidental shooting to a homicide. On October 26, 2022, police arrested 22-year-old Javone Duncan in connection with Raelynn's death. He was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. As he was being taken from the precinct, Duncan proclaimed his innocence.
Javone Duncan, of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, stood trial for the killing. In March 2024, a jury convicted him of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. The evidence presented at the trial indicated that Duncan had pointed a loaded gun at another woman at the party earlier that evening before turning the weapon on Raelynn. Following his conviction, on May 21, 2024, a judge sentenced Javone Duncan to 15 years in prison for the senseless act that ended the life of a young woman on the cusp of adulthood.
