Deputy Sheriff Thomas J. Thompson of the Talbot County Sheriff's Office in Maryland was tragically killed on March 1, 1902, while attempting to recapture five prisoners who had escaped from the Easton Jail. The incident occurred as Deputy Thompson and another deputy approached a home belonging to the brother of three of the escapees. As they neared the residence, the prisoners opened fire, instantly killing Deputy Thompson.
