In the line of duty, Deputy Sheriff Thomas J. Thompson, a male, met an untimely and violent end on Saturday, March 1, 1902, in Easton, Maryland. His death came during a courageous attempt to recapture five inmates who had managed to escape from the Easton Jail. Thompson, along with another deputy, had tracked the fugitives to a house belonging to the brother of three of the escaped men.
