In the line of duty, Deputy Sheriff Thomas J. Thompson, a male, met an untimely and violent end on Saturday, March 1, 1902, in Easton, Maryland. His death came during a courageous attempt to recapture five inmates who had managed to escape from the Easton Jail. Thompson, along with another deputy, had tracked the fugitives to a house belonging to the brother of three of the escaped men.
As the two lawmen approached the residence, they were met with a sudden and fatal barrage of gunfire from the concealed prisoners.
The attack was swift and brutal, with Deputy Thompson being struck and killed instantly by a rifle shot. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, his fellow deputy, having escaped injury, quickly retreated to summon reinforcements. The prompt response led to the successful recapture of all five escapees shortly thereafter, bringing a swift end to their brief taste of freedom. Justice for the killing of Deputy Thompson was pursued in the legal system. The individual responsible for firing the fatal shot was identified and prosecuted for the murder. On June 9, 1902, the suspect was convicted for his role in the death of the deputy. Following the conviction, the court handed down a sentence of 12 years in prison for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Thomas J. Thompson.
