In September 1953, the city of Baltimore became the final setting in the life of John Brady Murphy, a 36-year-old male Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Murphy, a married father of three, had dedicated 13 years of his life to the agency. His career would come to a violent end while in pursuit of a murder suspect and parole violator named John Elgin Johnson.
The tragic events unfolded on September 25, 1953, inside a movie theater at 311 West Fayette Street.
The FBI had successfully tracked Johnson, a 32-year-old fugitive recently released from Alcatraz after serving a sentence for bank robbery, to the theater. The lead that brought them there was a telephone call Johnson made to Los Angeles. As Special Agent Murphy and his fellow agents moved in to apprehend the suspect within the theater, Johnson opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, Murphy was fatally wounded, and another agent was injured.
The agents returned fire, and in the exchange, John Elgin Johnson was shot and killed. Despite being mortally wounded, Agent Murphy emptied his revolver at Johnson. Rushed to a nearby hospital, John Brady Murphy succumbed to his injuries the following day, on September 26, 1953. Before he passed, he was informed that Johnson was dead, to which he reportedly responded, 'May God have mercy on his soul.'
