Robert Franklin Pyles Sr., a 54-year-old officer with the Maryland Toll Facilities Police Department, tragically lost his life on September 27, 1986, after being shot in the line of duty. The incident occurred on September 18, 1986, while Officer Pyles was on routine patrol on US Route 40 across the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge, which connects Harford and Cecil Counties in Maryland.
