Herman A. Jones, Sr., a 50-year-old Baltimore Police Officer, was shot and killed on May 26, 1993, in a Chinese food carryout in East Baltimore. After completing his 4 p.m. to midnight shift, the 24-year veteran of the police force stopped at the restaurant in the 1500 block of North Gay Street to get food. While waiting for his order, three teenagers entered the establishment in an attempted robbery.
The off-duty officer, who was wearing a light jacket over his uniform, was grabbed by
the suspects. One of the teenagers, armed with a. 38 caliber handgun, shot Officer Jones twice. Despite being mortally wounded, Officer Jones was able to return fire and struck two of his assailants. All three suspects were apprehended shortly after the incident.
The three teenagers were charged as adults with first-degree murder and handgun violations. The gunman was identified as 17-year-old Herbert 'Squeaky' Wilson. The other two suspects were Clifton 'Chip' Price, 17, and Derrick N. Broadway, 16.
Herbert Wilson was convicted of first-degree felony murder, use of a handgun in a violent crime, attempted armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus 40 years. Clifton Price and Derrick Broadway both pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, attempted armed robbery, and a handgun charge. In exchange for their testimony against Wilson, they each received a 50-year prison sentence.
