On the evening of May 19, 2015, emergency services responded to a call of a double shooting in the 500 block of North Pulaski Street in Baltimore, Maryland. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 49-year-old woman with gunshot wounds to her leg and arm. They also found 42-year-old Michael Smith, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his body.
Both victims were immediately transported to a local shock trauma center for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Michael Smith succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital. The female victim, however, survived the attack. The incident was classified as a homicide, prompting an extensive investigation by the Baltimore Police Department. For nearly ten months, detectives worked to piece together the events of that night and identify the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting of Michael Smith.
The investigation led to a significant breakthrough in March 2016, when police arrested 38-year-old Fred Whiting III in connection with the murder. Whiting was subsequently charged with first-degree murder for his role in the death of Michael Smith. Following his arrest, Whiting was taken to central booking to await his court appearance. He was later convicted of the first-degree murder of Michael Smith and the attempted second-degree murder of the female victim.
