On a December evening in 2017, a young man’s life was abruptly cut short in a residential Waldorf neighborhood. Cameron Marcel Townsend, an 18-year-old male from Brandywine, was found suffering from several gunshot wounds in the intersection of Holly Avenue and Spruce Street on December 14th. Charles County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 8:24 p.m. and discovered Townsend, who was not breathing. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Witnesses at the time reported seeing a dark-colored vehicle fleeing the area after hearing the gunshots.
The investigation into Cameron Townsend's death quickly progressed, and two days later, on December 16, 2017, detectives arrested a suspect. Nicholas Jabbar Williams, a 20-year-old from Waldorf, was taken into custody in connection with the murder. The investigation revealed that Townsend and Williams knew each other, although a clear motive for the shooting was not immediately established. Williams was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other related charges.
Further investigation uncovered the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Earlier on the day of the murder, Williams had been driving around with Townsend and two other individuals in his black Hyundai Accent, traveling to Prince George's County and Washington, D.C., before returning to Charles County. After dropping off the other two men, Williams drove Townsend to a different neighborhood in Waldorf. It was there that Williams shot Townsend multiple times while he was still inside the vehicle. Williams then removed Townsend's body from the car and left him on the side of the road before driving away. A search of Williams' car and home uncovered crucial evidence, including a shell casing that matched those found at the crime scene and Townsend's blood inside the vehicle and on one of Williams' shoes.
Following a seven-day trial, a Charles County jury convicted Nicholas Jabbar Williams, then 22, of the second-degree murder of Cameron Townsend and related gun charges on June 18, 2019. He faced a potential sentence of up to 47 years in prison for his crimes.
