She was last seen leaving the business on Bardstown Road around 4:30 a.m. in her mother's Lincoln Continental SUV. Later that day, her family grew concerned when she did not return home. They eventually located the abandoned SUV near 46th and Market streets, just a few blocks from Shawnee Park.
The vehicle had been ransacked, and valuables were stolen. The smell of cigarette smoke lingered inside, a detail her mother noted as unusual since neither she nor her daughter smoked.
On the afternoon of Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Louisville Metro Police were called to the Shawnee Park boat ramp after receiving a report of a person down. In a wooded area near the ramp, they discovered Rachael Hughes's body. She had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation revealed she had been shot eight times, with wounds to her head, neck, and torso. The senseless violence of her death left her family heartbroken, with her mother expressing that nobody deserved such a fate.
The investigation into Rachael's murder quickly led to a suspect. Surveillance footage captured 27-year-old Michael Bullock leaving the Bardstown Road business with Hughes. Cameras at the boat ramp recorded them arriving together and getting out of the car. Police stated that as Hughes walked ahead of him, Bullock pulled out a handgun and shot her eight times. He then left the scene in her vehicle. Court documents revealed that Bullock returned to the scene twice, accompanied by an unidentified individual. They were seen dragging Hughes's body into the wooded area where she was later found.
Michael Bullock was arrested and charged with murder, robbery, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. A judge set his bond at one million dollars. Later, a juvenile was also charged in connection with the case. The juvenile faced charges of receiving stolen property, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with physical evidence for allegedly helping Bullock move Hughes's body and dispose of her phone in the river.
