In the early evening of April 10, 2019, a report of a suspicious vehicle led Prince George's County police to a grim discovery in the 3200 block of Ryan Drive in Suitland, Maryland. Inside the car, officers found 23-year-old Kevin Givens, a male resident of Southeast Washington, D.C., suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of Givens quickly progressed, and homicide detectives began working to identify a suspect and a motive
for the shooting. Friends and family created a street shrine in his memory in the 3700 block of First Street SE in Washington D.C., near his home. Those who knew him left messages of grief and remembrance, with some referring to him by the nickname 'Wop'.
Within a week, authorities identified and arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting. Malik Edouard, a 20-year-old from Temple Hills, was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Kevin Givens. Investigators revealed that Edouard and Givens were not strangers and had met through mutual acquaintances.
While an arrest was made, the motive for the shooting remained under investigation. Edouard was charged with first and second-degree murder, along with other related charges. Following his arrest, he was held in the custody of the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.
