On the night of August 19, 2019, in Middle River, Maryland, 44-year-old Curtis Jerome McKisset was fatally shot at a residence on Shagbark Road. The events leading to his death began when Deontae Maurice Banks, then 22 years old, visited the home to meet a woman.
While at the residence, Banks allegedly stole money from and sexually assaulted the woman. An argument subsequently broke out between Banks and McKisset.
The confrontation escalated, culminating in Banks pulling out a handgun and shooting McKisset. Emergency services were called to the scene just before midnight, and McKisset was rushed to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Baltimore County Police homicide detectives quickly began an investigation into the shooting. Their investigation led them to identify Deontae Maurice Banks as the suspect. On August 23, 2019, police announced that Banks had been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape, and armed robbery in connection with the incident. He was subsequently held at the Baltimore County Department of Corrections without bail. Investigators determined that Banks had gone to the house with the intention of committing robbery and sexual assault, which ultimately led to the fatal confrontation with McKisset.
