Medical professionals examining the newborn discovered a constellation of horrific injuries
that were inconsistent with a fall from a bed. The baby had sustained at least five broken bones, including fractures in his left arm, both of his legs, and his right tibia. A bruise was also found on the baby's head. The severity of the injuries led a pediatric nurse to classify them as being 'diagnostic of inflicted physical abuse' and reflective of an 'extreme indifference for human life.'
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Crimes Against Children Unit launched an investigation. According to reports, the baby's mother, Amanda Yff, told police that she had fed the baby and then fallen asleep while Brent Bishop was looking after him. She claimed that when they woke up, they found the baby face-down on the floor. The investigation took a decisive turn with the discovery of security camera footage from inside the home. The video evidence reportedly showed Bishop alone with the infant, lifting him by the throat, striking him in the head, and blowing vape smoke in his face.
Both Brent Bishop, who also goes by the name Michael Bishop, and Amanda Yff were initially arrested on charges of felony child abuse. A search of their residence also uncovered cocaine, methamphetamine, oxycodone, marijuana, a gun, and drug paraphernalia. However, in light of the video evidence, all charges against Amanda Yff were eventually dropped.
Brent Bishop pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree child abuse. In September 2022, the 32-year-old father was sentenced to five years in prison for the brutal assault on his newborn son.
