On a winter day in Baltimore, the life of 17-year-old London Stuckey was tragically cut short. On December 13, 2019, the young man was walking down the 5600 block of Woodmont Avenue when he was fatally shot. Surveillance footage from that day captured the moments leading up to the incident, showing two individuals following closely behind him.
The investigation into Stuckey's death led authorities to a violent North Baltimore gang known as the '39 Babies.'
A sweeping indictment in July 2020 charged several alleged members of the gang with a string of violent crimes, including the murder of London Stuckey. The prosecution revealed a pattern of violence that terrorized communities, with the gang being linked to multiple homicides and attempted murders.
In February 2024, a significant development occurred in the case when 23-year-old Karon Johnson, described by prosecutors as a 'high-ranking' member of the gang, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. One of those counts was for the killing of London Stuckey. As part of his plea, Johnson admitted to his role in the fatal shooting. He was sentenced to life in prison with all but 40 years suspended. Another member, Gregory Beadles, also pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in connection with Stuckey's death in September 2024 and was sentenced to life with all but 30 years suspended. Pierre Briggs, another individual connected to the gang, also entered a guilty plea for his involvement in the criminal organization.
The sentencings brought a measure of closure to a case that highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence in the city. During the court proceedings, London Stuckey's mother submitted a victim impact statement, expressing the profound and enduring pain of losing her son. Her words painted a heartbreaking picture of a family shattered by a senseless act of violence.
