On a Friday afternoon in Park Hall, Maryland, the life of 24-year-old Jordan Lee Sullivan was tragically cut short. On January 3, 2020, Sullivan was at the residence of a younger acquaintance, 18-year-old Brian Lee Chaney. The two were in the kitchen when Chaney began handling a revolver.
According to what Chaney later told investigators, he believed the firearm was unloaded. He claimed to have removed six bullets from the six-shot revolver.
However, he had a total of seven bullets for the weapon. Believing the gun to be empty, Chaney pulled the trigger three times. The first two pulls resulted in nothing more than a click. On the third pull, the gun discharged, sending a single bullet into Jordan Lee Sullivan's chest.
After realizing what had happened, Chaney immediately called 911 and attempted to provide life-saving measures to Sullivan. Emergency services arrived at the Point Lookout Road residence and transported Sullivan to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced deceased at 1:40 p.m. that same day.
Detectives from the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene to begin their investigation. Following an interview with Brian Lee Chaney, during which he waived his Miranda rights and recounted the events of the afternoon, he was taken into custody. Chaney was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. He was incarcerated at the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center to await an appearance before a District Court Commissioner.
