In the summer of 2020, on the evening of August 6th, the life of 31-year-old Yohannes Carr was tragically cut short on the 2400 block of Etting Street in Baltimore. At approximately 10:28 p.m., Carr was fatally shot, becoming another victim of the city's gun violence. The incident prompted an investigation by homicide detectives who would soon identify a suspect in the killing.
Within a week of the shooting, the Baltimore Police Department's Warrant Apprehension Task Force located and
arrested their person of interest. On August 14, 2020, John Brown Jr., a 21-year-old resident of the 6600 block of Knottwood Court, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Yohannes Carr and held at the Central Booking Intake Facility without bail.
Over a year later, in August 2021, the case against John Brown Jr. moved through the court system. Prosecutors offered the then 22-year-old a plea deal which included a sentence of life in prison with all but 60 years suspended for first-degree murder, to be served concurrently with a 20-year sentence for a firearm offense, the first five years of which would be without the possibility of parole. Brown, through his defense attorney, rejected this offer. In addition to the murder charge, Brown faced a series of other accusations, including possession of a handgun in his vehicle, carrying a handgun on his person, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. After waiving his right to a speedy trial, a trial date was set for January 18, 2022.
