In the early morning hours of September 6, 2020, the quiet of a Montgomery Village, Maryland apartment complex was broken by a grim discovery. A police officer, on an unrelated call, found the body of 37-year-old Mark Earl Leonard Webb lying face down in the parking lot on Willow Creek Drive. He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy later confirmed that his death was a homicide.
The investigation into Webb's death led detectives to believe he was the victim of a robbery that turned fatal. Investigators learned that Webb was acquainted with one of the men who would later be charged in connection with his death. Within months, the Montgomery County Police Department announced the arrests of three suspects. Anthony Thompson, then 45, was identified by police as the primary suspect who allegedly shot and killed Webb. He was charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
A second suspect, Larry Donnell Armwood, also 45 at the time, was determined to have been present during the murder and was accused of stealing property from Webb. He faced charges of armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. The third individual charged was 39-year-old Trireese Chance. Investigators alleged that after the murder, Chance accompanied Thompson and assisted him in disposing of the handgun used in the crime. Chance was subsequently charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.
At the time of their arrests in March 2021, both Thompson and Chance were already incarcerated on unrelated charges, Thompson in Montgomery County and Chance in Virginia. Armwood was taken into custody on a Montgomery County arrest warrant and held without bond. The collaborative investigation brought charges against all three men, painting a picture of a coordinated effort to rob and ultimately take the life of Mark Earl Leonard Webb.
