A 24-year-old Black male, Fredrick Markeith Young, was killed in a shooting on the morning of January 19, 2021, in Bryans Road, Maryland. The Charles County Sheriff's Office reported to the area of South Hampton Drive at Weston Drive around 9:39 a.m. for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Young with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Despite life-saving efforts from citizens and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation swiftly identified Harold Leonard Turley, also 24 and from Bryans Road, as the primary suspect. It was determined that Young and Turley were acquaintances. Following the shooting, Turley fled into a nearby house. Law enforcement officers established a perimeter and successfully persuaded the occupants to exit the residence. The Emergency Services Team and Hostage Negotiators Team were deployed and, after entering the house, confirmed it was empty.
Detectives subsequently identified Turley, who was among the individuals who had exited the house, as the shooter. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a crime, among other related charges. Turley was held at the Charles County Detention Center without bond. The motive for the shooting remained under investigation.
