On a tragic day in December, a 32-year-old man, John Paul Cruz of Bryans Road, Maryland, lost his life in a senseless act of violence. On December 23, 2021, Cruz was discovered fatally shot in the driver's seat of his vehicle, which was located in the 5500 block of Livingston Road in Oxon Hill. An investigation into his death would later reveal a fatal setup orchestrated by four individuals.
Subsequent police work brought to light the harrowing details of Cruz's final moments.
He had been lured to the Oxon Hill location under the pretense of a casual social gathering to smoke marijuana. However, the invitation was a deceptive plot to rob him. Upon his arrival, Cruz was confronted by several people who ordered him out of his car before shooting him and stealing his phone. The investigation led to the apprehension of four suspects in connection with the murder.
The individuals arrested were identified as 24-year-old Josue Cristobal Torres, 21-year-old Angel Amaya, and two juveniles whose names were not publicly released. The legal process that followed saw each of the accused facing justice for their roles in the death of John Paul Cruz. Torres was ultimately found guilty of first-degree murder, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. His conviction carried a sentence of life in prison plus an additional 40 years.
Angel Amaya, another of the adult suspects, entered a guilty plea to a charge of first-degree murder. His plea agreement resulted in a life sentence, with all but 15 years suspended. The two juvenile co-defendants also pleaded guilty for their involvement in the crime.
