On the night of February 12, 2021, Kamari Ivery-Williams, a 25-year-old male, was fatally shot inside a music studio in South Baltimore, Maryland. Police responded to a shooting report on the 100 block of Baltic Avenue just after midnight. Upon arrival, they found Ivery-Williams suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Ivery-Williams, an aspiring audio engineer and music artist who had
moved to Baltimore two and a half years prior, quickly focused on the owner of the studio, Michael Joseph, Sr. Joseph, who was also Ivery-Williams's stepfather, was at the scene when police arrived and was identified as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm during a violent crime.
During the trial, the defense argued that Michael Joseph, Sr. acted in self-defense during a business dispute with Ivery-Williams, claiming he feared for his life. However, the prosecution presented a conflicting narrative, supported by the testimony of Joseph's own son. The son testified that his father was the aggressor in the altercation, initiating the physical conflict that led to the shooting. The prosecution also pointed out inconsistencies in Joseph's account of the events.
In April 2022, a jury found Michael Joseph, Sr. guilty on all charges, including first-degree murder, in the death of Kamari Ivery-Williams.
