On a Friday afternoon in Baltimore, May 21, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the downtown calm, leaving a Black/African American man, 33-year-old Tony Hedgspeth, fatally wounded. The shooting occurred in broad daylight on the 200 block of West Lexington Street. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Hedgspeth suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The incident drew immediate attention from homicide detectives, who took control of the investigation and began the arduous process of piecing together the events that led to Hedgspeth’s death.
The investigation moved forward, and within a few weeks, authorities made their first arrest. On June 11, 2021, police took 27-year-old Christian Saint Rose into custody. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Hedgspeth's death. The search for a second individual believed to be involved continued, and on June 22, 2021, detectives arrested 27-year-old Jamal Kingsborough. Like Saint Rose, Kingsborough was also charged with first-degree murder. Both men were held at Central Booking as the legal process began to unfold. A grand jury later indicted both Saint Rose and Kingsborough on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence.
As the case proceeded through the court system, new details emerged. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Kingsborough riding a scooter down West Lexington Street where the shooting took place. After the incident, he was seen walking to a nearby street where Saint Rose was waiting in a parked car. Kingsborough entered the vehicle, and Saint Rose drove away. This evidence formed a key part of the prosecution's case against both men. Despite this, the path to conviction proved to be fraught with challenges. In August 2022, during a bench trial for Christian Saint Rose, a judge dismissed the charges against him.
The case against Jamal Kingsborough also failed to reach a conviction. In October 2022, prosecutors were forced to enter a nolle prosequi, which is a formal notice of abandonment of the prosecution. This decision was made after a crucial witness in the case could not be located, leaving the prosecution without the necessary testimony to proceed. Although an initial plea deal had been offered to Kingsborough, which he rejected, the absence of the key witness ultimately led to the collapse of the case against him. While two suspects were arrested and charged, no one has been convicted for the murder of Tony Hedgspeth.
