On July 8, 2021, the day after his 35th birthday, Anthony Cain Jr., a male, was fatally shot in Baltimore, Maryland. The incident occurred on the 1600 block of Cliftview Avenue, where police found Cain suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Cain's death led Baltimore Police to identify 37-year-old Trayon Waters as a suspect.
On July 9, 2021, officers on patrol found Waters standing at the corner of Harford Road and Cliftview Avenue, a few blocks from the scene of the shooting. He was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Cain's death.
During the trial of Trayon Waters in January 2023, prosecutors presented video surveillance footage of Anthony Cain Jr.'s final moments. The footage showed Cain being approached by three men, including Waters. An assistant state's attorney described to the jury how Cain begged for his life before being shot six times. The prosecution also used the video to match Waters' clothing to that of the shooter. Though the defense attorney argued that the video was not clear enough to definitively identify her client, Waters had reportedly identified himself in the video during a police interview.
On January 27, 2023, a jury found Trayon Waters guilty of second-degree murder and three weapons charges. He was scheduled for sentencing on April 13 of the same year.
