On a late March afternoon in 2019, the life of 39-year-old Tyree Lee was tragically cut short on the streets of Baltimore. On March 27, at approximately 2:50 p.m., Lee was walking in the 4600 block of Wellington Avenue when he was confronted and shot at by a man later identified as Lorenzo Thomas. The initial assault escalated as Thomas pursued Lee into the 3900 block of Penhurst Avenue, where he fatally shot him multiple times.
The investigation into Lee's murder quickly pointed to
43-year-old Lorenzo Thomas as the primary suspect. According to testimony from Lee's girlfriend, who was with him when he was killed, the shooting stemmed from a confrontation over money that had occurred the previous day between Lee and Thomas. It was also alleged that Lee had witnessed Thomas shoot another individual the night before his own murder, creating a potential motive for silencing a witness. Lee had reportedly expressed fear of Thomas in text messages to his mother shortly before his death.
On April 10, 2019, Lorenzo Thomas was arrested without incident in the 4400 block of Garrison Boulevard. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and several firearms violations. In May of 2023, Thomas was found guilty of first- and second-degree murder, as well as illegal firearm possession. However, in a turn of events, the Appellate Court of Maryland remanded the case on December 26, 2024. A new bench trial for Thomas began on December 10, 2025. During this trial, the defense highlighted a lack of forensic and video evidence directly linking Thomas to the crime and noted that an eyewitness had failed to identify him in a lineup. The prosecution reiterated the facts of the case, relying on eyewitness testimony and the alleged motive.
