On a tragic evening in Harwood, Maryland, the life of 25-year-old Shelby Lyn Chialastri was cut short in what police have described as a murder-suicide. The incident unfolded on August 12, 2021, when authorities responded to reports of gunshots and screaming in the vicinity of the 4700 block of Flanders Lane around 10:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered a harrowing scene.
Shelby Lyn Chialastri, a female resident of Harwood, was found inside a vehicle, having sustained a fatal
gunshot wound. In the nearby parking lot, law enforcement located 23-year-old Harrison Lawrence Hertel of Annapolis, who had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite the immediate medical aid rendered by the officers, both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Subsequent investigation by Anne Arundel County Police homicide detectives revealed that Chialastri and Hertel had recently been in a domestic relationship that had ended. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later confirmed through autopsies that Chialastri's death was a homicide and Hertel's was a suicide, with both succumbing to gunshot wounds. Authorities have indicated that the shooting was a targeted incident and not a random act of violence, assuring the community that there was no further public safety risk. While the investigation delved into possible motives, law enforcement noted there were no prior reports of domestic violence involving the couple filed with the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
Shelby, who was born on September 7, 1995, in Clinton, Maryland, had been a resident of Harwood for 18 years. Remembered for her love of her pets, painting, and baking, particularly with her grandfather, she also found joy in gardening and spending time with her family.
