In the pre-dawn hours of New Year's Day 2022, the life of 16-year-old Desmond Canada was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire that also claimed the life of 17-year-old Bernard Thomas. The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the 3600 block of Gelston Drive in Baltimore, Maryland, marking a violent start to the new year. A third teenager, a 16-year-old male, was also wounded in the attack but survived.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene in the Edmondson Village neighborhood
to find the three victims with gunshot wounds. Desmond Canada and Bernard Thomas were pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was a grim reminder of the persistent issue of gun violence impacting the city's youth.
In an effort to bring the perpetrators to justice, the Baltimore Police Department, in partnership with Metro Crime Stoppers, announced a $4,000 reward for information that would lead to an arrest and conviction in the double homicide. Despite the offered incentive and the ongoing investigation by authorities, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the killings.
