James E. Blue III, a 43-year-old male, was fatally shot on January 25, 2022, in Baltimore, Maryland. At the time of his death, Blue, an Amtrak conductor, was waiting in his vehicle for a refrigerator to be delivered to a property he was renovating on Walker Avenue. He was on the phone with his son, who was away at college, when the shooting occurred.
His son later recounted hearing approximately 20 shots over the phone.
The incident was initially perplexing, as Blue was a respected father of three and the husband of a Baltimore Police captain, prompting investigators to initially consider if the killing was related to his wife's profession, a possibility that was ultimately ruled out. The prevailing theory that emerged was that this was a tragic case of mistaken identity. Blue was simply waiting in his car when his presence aroused the suspicion of the shooter.
A teenage suspect, 18-year-old Mervo High School student Sahiou Kargbo, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. At the time of the shooting, Kargbo had two open warrants for his arrest. Investigators were able to connect Kargbo to the crime in part due to his clothing, which was similar to his school's uniform.
During his trial, Kargbo admitted to killing Blue but claimed it was in self-defense. He testified that he believed Blue might have been someone who had previously targeted a family friend's home. However, the lead detective on the case noted that although Blue was legally armed, he never drew his weapon. In February 2023, a jury acquitted Kargbo of first-degree murder but found him guilty of second-degree murder and gun charges. Subsequently, in June 2023, a judge sentenced Sahiou Kargbo to 65 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed.
