On the evening of March 4, 2022, a sense of normalcy in Wheaton, Maryland was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 17-year-old Devin Dickey of Silver Spring. The male teenager, who was Black/African American, was in the vicinity of Georgia Avenue and Reedie Drive at approximately 6:45 p.m. when he was shot. Montgomery County Police officers responded to reports of the shooting and discovered Devin suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were rendered at the scene, and he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital in a bid to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Devin succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the homicide commenced immediately, with detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division leading the effort. Witnesses at the scene were able to provide law enforcement with a physical description of the individual who fled the area after the shooting. A perimeter was established as officers began a search for the person responsible. Their search led them to the nearby Wheaton Metro Station, where they located a man who matched the suspect's description.
The individual found inside the metro station was identified as 20-year-old Cardel Chaney, also a resident of Silver Spring. In a collaborative effort with the Metro Transit Police Department, detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the station. This footage, along with other items of evidentiary value recovered at the scene, linked Chaney to the fatal shooting of Devin Dickey.
Cardel Chaney was subsequently arrested and transported to the Central Processing Unit. He was charged with second-degree murder in connection with Devin Dickey's death. Following his arrest, Chaney was held without bond. A preliminary hearing for his case was scheduled for March 18, 2022, at the Montgomery District Court in Rockville.
