On a tragic afternoon in Smithsburg, Maryland, the life of 50-year-old Mark Alan Frey was cut short in a burst of workplace violence. On June 9, 2022, Frey was fatally shot at his place of employment, Columbia Machine Inc. He was not the only victim that day; two of his co-workers, Charles Edward Minnick, Jr., 31, and Joshua Robert Wallace, 30, were also killed. Another colleague and a state trooper were wounded but survived.
