In the early hours of a summer morning in Baltimore, a fatal encounter unfolded that would end the life of 38-year-old Delaney Simmons. On August 20, 2022, police responded to a shot spotter alert around 12:39 a.m. in the 500 block of Bentalou Street. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered Simmons lying in an alley adjacent to the 2300 block of Ashton Street, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a trauma center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 26-year-old Kamar Williams. At the time of the incident, Williams was working as a bouncer at his grandmother's bar, located near where Simmons was found. According to the defense attorney for Williams, an altercation occurred inside the bar which resulted in Simmons being ejected from the establishment.
The events escalated when Simmons allegedly threatened to come back with a handgun. The defense claims that Simmons did indeed return armed, which led to Williams shooting him in what he argues was an act of self-defense. Following his arrest, Williams was charged with the murder of Delaney Simmons. The case was scheduled to go to trial in July of the following year.
