On July 6, 1977, a 26-year-old male Baltimore County Police Officer named Charles Alan Huckeba was shot and killed in the line of duty. Having served with the department for less than a year, he was responding to a domestic disturbance in Lansdowne.
As Officer Huckeba and his partner, Officer John Stem, approached a house in the 2400 block of Brunswick Road, a man inside opened fire. Officer Huckeba was struck in the face and died almost instantly.
When Officer Stem attempted to render aid to his fallen partner, he too was shot.
The suspect, who was determined to be high on PCP, was later shot and killed by the police department's tactical unit on the same day. Officer Stem was paralyzed from the gunshot wound he sustained during the incident. He ultimately succumbed to medical complications from his injuries in 2000. Officer Huckeba, who had previously served with the Howard County Police Department, left behind a wife and a young son at the time of his death.
