In the late 18th century, a dedicated lawman met a tragic and untimely end in the quiet backcountry of South Carolina. Sheriff Robert Maxwell, a 45-year-old veteran of the Revolutionary War, was a respected figure in the Washington District. On the morning of November 10, 1797, he set out on horseback, his destination the courthouse in Pickensville. His journey, however, was cut short in a violent ambush that would leave a lasting mark on the community.
