In the late 18th century, a dedicated lawman met a tragic and untimely end in the quiet backcountry of South Carolina. Sheriff Robert Maxwell, a 45-year-old veteran of the Revolutionary War, was a respected figure in the Washington District. On the morning of November 10, 1797, he set out on horseback, his destination the courthouse in Pickensville.
His journey, however, was cut short in a violent ambush that would leave a lasting mark on the community.
As Sheriff Maxwell attempted to cross the Saluda River, near the location of what would become the Piedmont Mill Dam, a hail of gunfire erupted from a hidden assailant or assailants. The attack was sudden and brutal, and the sheriff, caught completely by surprise, was fatally wounded. The motive for this heinous act was believed to be directly related to his unwavering commitment to upholding the law. He was targeted and killed simply because he was a law enforcement officer. The news of his murder sent shockwaves through the region, a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who dared to enforce justice on the frontier.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an investigation was launched to bring the perpetrators to justice. The inquiries led to the arrest of one man who was charged in connection with the ambush and murder of Sheriff Maxwell. The case against him proceeded to trial, where the evidence was presented before a jury. However, the prosecution was unable to secure a conviction, and the sole suspect in the sheriff's killing was acquitted of all charges. The identity of who fired the fatal shots that day officially remains an unsolved mystery, a cold case from the annals of South Carolina history. Sheriff Maxwell was survived by his wife and son and was laid to rest in the Maxwell family cemetery on his plantation near Ware Place in Greenville County.
