Robert Maxwell, who served as the Sheriff of Washington District in South Carolina, met a tragic end on November 10, 1797, at the age of 45. He was ambushed and shot while on his way to court in Pickensville, South Carolina. The incident occurred as he attempted to cross the Saluda River, near the location of the modern-day Piedmont Mill Dam. The ambush was a targeted attack due to his role as a law enforcement officer.
