Clarence Calhoun Gist, who served as the Town Marshal of Carlisle, South Carolina, tragically lost his life on May 26, 1907. At the young age of 25, Marshal Gist was shot and killed by a prisoner in the town lock-up. Earlier that day, Marshal Gist had arrested the suspect for causing a disturbance at a ball game. Later that night, when Marshal Gist entered the lock-up, the suspect opened fire with a revolver, fatally wounding him.
