Deputy Dispensary Constable John Dozier Altman, aged 81, was tragically killed on July 6, 1909, in Ravenel, South Carolina. Altman, along with Dispensary Constable Pinkney Fishburne, was attempting to stop a man from taking a keg of contraband whiskey from the town's railroad station. The incident escalated when the man, confronted by Fishburne, opened fire, striking Fishburne in the chest.
