Corporal John R. Clinton, a 40-year-old veteran of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, tragically lost his life on May 24, 1983, while on duty in Chester County, South Carolina. Clinton, who had served with the Patrol for 16 years, was attempting to make an arrest during a routine traffic stop on Highway 72, approximately nine miles west of Chester. During the stop, he discovered that the driver was operating a stolen vehicle and was wanted in Baltimore for an armed robbery charge.
