In the early hours of December 29, 2002, a male Myrtle Beach police officer, 28-year-old Joseph John 'Joe' McGarry, was shot and killed in the line of duty. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a Dunkin' Donuts on North Kings Highway.
