In a tragic turn of events on January 27, 2014, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a dispute over a drug transaction ended the life of 46-year-old Michael Jerome Rogers. The man responsible for his death, Antwuan Levon Nelson, then 29, was later sentenced to a lengthy prison term for the violent crime.
The incident began when Nelson went to Rogers' residence with the intention of selling him drugs.
A disagreement arose when Rogers decided against the purchase, leading to a physical altercation between the two men. Following the fight, Nelson left the scene, only to return a short time later armed with an AR-15 assault rifle. He lay in wait for Rogers to emerge from his home.
When Rogers stepped outside, Nelson fired three shots, one of which proved to be fatal. The Horry County Deputy Coroner, Darris Fowler, was involved in the investigation that followed. Law enforcement agencies worked together to piece together the events that led to the shooting.
Nelson was subsequently arrested and faced legal proceedings for his actions. He was ultimately convicted of manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. For these charges, he received a sentence of 30 years in prison, with 25 years for the manslaughter charge and an additional five years for the weapon charge. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice for the untimely death of Michael Rogers.
