In the late afternoon of June 14, 2014, a tragic shooting cut short the life of 26-year-old Antonio Dexter Smith II in the parking lot of the Canterbury Apartments in Carolina Forest, South Carolina, where he resided. The incident unfolded around 3:45 p.m. when witnesses reported hearing between four and six gunshots. An officer on patrol near the apartment complex responded to a call about the gunshots and discovered a gold Ford Expedition that had crashed into a Toyota Corolla in the parking
lot. Smith was found on the ground next to the Ford with gunshot wounds to his chest, stomach, and arm. Bystanders had begun performing CPR before emergency medical services arrived and transported him to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification of two suspects from Conway. Delshawn Anthony Davis, 32 at the time, surrendered to police in June 2014 and was charged with murder and assault by mob. The second suspect, Akeem Akbar Young, then 40, was located and taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal Task Force in Fayetteville, North Carolina, later that same year. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a Chrysler 300 speeding away after the gunfire, and investigators recovered five shell casings from the area.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Delshawn Anthony Davis pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on December 12, 2016, and the assault charge against him was dropped. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with credit for the 909 days he had already served in jail. Akeem Akbar Young, who was also charged with murder, faced a trial that was scheduled to take place in March of the following year.
