In the summer of 2014, a weekend block party in Prosperity, South Carolina, turned into a scene of tragedy, abruptly ending the life of 19-year-old Zemeckis Monteco Devante Houston of Newberry. On the night of July 20th, what was meant to be a joyous gathering on Rikard School Road, attended by over 100 people, was shattered by the sound of gunshots.
In the ensuing chaos, Houston was fatally struck in the head and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Newberry County Sheriff's deputies, who were already en route to the location due to noise and traffic complaints, arrived to a frantic crowd attempting to flee. Amid the turmoil, they discovered Houston's body. Their investigation into the shooting pointed to an ongoing dispute between Houston and another individual. This led them to 29-year-old Jonathan Sentel Dominick, who had also sustained a gunshot wound during the altercation and was hospitalized.
Following his release from the hospital, Dominick was arrested on July 22, 2014, and charged with the murder of Zemeckis Houston. Investigators clarified that there was no indication that Houston had shot Dominick. The legal proceedings that followed saw Dominick ultimately plead guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the death of the young man whose life was cut short on that summer night.
