On August 4, 2014, William 'Joey' Stephens, a 20-year-old from Columbus, South Carolina, was tragically shot and killed in Hallowell. The incident occurred early in the morning, and law enforcement quickly responded to the scene. Following a search of the area, deputies located Skyler C. Gurnee, a 19-year-old from rural Columbus, who was identified as a suspect in the shooting. Gurnee was detained shortly after the incident and was hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the event.
