On a cold January evening in 2015, the life of 23-year-old Donnie Lee Brooks Jr. was tragically cut short in a shooting that also left another man injured in North Augusta, South Carolina. The incident unfolded on the 11th of that month, forever altering the lives of those involved.
Authorities were called to the scene of the shooting where they discovered Brooks had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Another victim at the scene had been shot in the leg and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. As investigators began to piece together the events of that night, a suspect was quickly identified.
The North Augusta Department of Public Safety announced they were searching for Thomas M. Sapp in connection with the shooting. Warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of murder and attempted murder. Law enforcement officials released Sapp's description and last known address to the public, seeking assistance in locating him.
Following a search, Thomas M. Sapp was apprehended and taken into custody. He was formally charged with the murder of Donnie Lee Brooks Jr. and the attempted murder of the second victim. Subsequent legal proceedings found Sapp guilty of the charges brought against him, leading to his conviction for the violent acts committed on that January night.
