Daniel Quentin Grooms, a 25-year-old male from Wallace, South Carolina, was fatally shot in the early morning hours of January 21, 2015. The incident unfolded at a residence on Level Green Church Road in the Wallace area of Marlboro County. Grooms was at the home of his girlfriend, Valerie Pernell, when her ex-boyfriend, Tony Maundrell Kastelan, arrived at the scene.
A confrontation ensued between Grooms and Kastelan, which escalated into a shootout.
Both men were armed, and gunfire was exchanged. During the altercation, Grooms sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Following the shooting, Kastelan fled the scene. The Marlboro County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the incident and dispatched deputies to the residence. Upon their arrival, they discovered Grooms deceased inside the home.
The investigation into the death of Daniel Grooms led to the identification of Tony Maundrell Kastelan as the primary suspect. He was subsequently arrested and faced charges in connection with the fatal shooting. In addition to Kastelan, two other individuals were taken into custody as the investigation progressed. Valerie Pernell, who was present at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Another man, Jermaine Terell Robinson, was also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact. The investigation suggested that both Pernell and Robinson were involved in assisting Kastelan after the shooting.
