In the quiet town of Greer, South Carolina, the life of 76-year-old Frankie Joyce Fowler Haney came to a tragic and unexpected end in the spring of 2015. A native of Greenville, she was known to her loved ones as a kind and gentle woman.
The circumstances that led to her untimely death began to unfold within the walls of her own home. On a weekend in late March, a gunshot shattered the peace of the residence.
Frankie was found to have been shot, and the person responsible was shockingly identified as her 84-year-old husband, Clifford Haney. He had only recently returned to their home after a three-month stay in a care facility and was slated to begin hospice care.
On the day of the incident, Clifford’s son heard a gunshot and rushed to investigate. He reportedly witnessed his father fire a second shot before he was able to intervene and take the firearm away. Frankie sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her stomach and was immediately transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries on Monday, March 30, 2015.
Following the shooting, authorities arrested Clifford Haney and initially charged him with attempted murder. It was anticipated that these charges would be upgraded to murder in light of his wife's passing. However, the legal proceedings against him took an unforeseen turn. On April 21, 2015, just three weeks after his wife’s death, Clifford I. Haney also passed away. His death brought an end to the criminal case against him, leaving behind a community to grapple with the sorrowful events that had transpired.
