On April 4, 2015, authorities in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, initiated a homicide investigation following a violent incident in the Snowden community. Police officers responded to a call at approximately 2:30 a.m. regarding a shooting that had taken place in the early morning hours. Upon arrival at the scene, first responders discovered the victim, 38-year-old Tameka Mitchell, who had suffered fatal injuries.
Mitchell, a Black female, was pronounced dead, marking a tragic loss for the local area.
Detectives immediately began processing the scene and gathering witness statements to identify the person responsible for the shooting. Early information released by the Mount Pleasant Police Department described the suspect as an acquaintance of the victim, suggesting the crime was not a random act of violence. The investigation quickly pointed toward a specific individual, leading law enforcement to coordinate with agencies across state lines to locate the alleged perpetrator.
Two days after the murder, on April 6, 2015, investigators successfully tracked the suspect to Fayetteville, North Carolina. Jimmy Coaxum, who was 28 years old at the time, was taken into custody by authorities in Cumberland County. He was arrested on a warrant for murder in connection with Mitchell's death. Following his apprehension, Coaxum was held at the Cumberland County Detention Center while awaiting extradition proceedings to return him to Charleston County to face the charges brought against him.
