In the late summer of 2016, a dispute between two men in Westminster, South Carolina, escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving one man dead and another facing a lengthy prison sentence. The life of Steven Gregory Brock, a 50-year-old White/Caucasian male, was cut short on September 1, 2016, inside his own home on Brock Road. The man responsible for his death, R.L. Webb, had engaged in a verbal altercation with Brock earlier that day.
Determined to confront Brock, Webb drove to his property to find the gate locked. After unsuccessfully attempting to shoot the lock off, he found another way onto the property and entered Brock's residence. Inside, he discovered Brock in a bedroom with a female acquaintance. It was there that Webb fatally shot Brock in the head. The woman who was with Brock managed to escape in Webb's car as he fired at her. She was able to find a Walhalla police officer and report the incident.
Oconee County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene to find Steven Brock deceased. A law enforcement K9 unit later discovered the murder weapon on the property. In the meantime, Webb fled the scene and hid in the nearby woods before leaving the state. His time as a fugitive was short-lived, however, as he was apprehended the following day in Lavonia, Georgia.
Webb was subsequently charged with murder and first-degree burglary. During his trial in December 2017, the prosecution presented a compelling case that included Webb's confession, eyewitness testimony, and expert analysis of firearms, DNA, and gunshot residue. The jury found R.L. Webb guilty on both charges, and he was sentenced to 45 years in prison. The solicitor, David Wagner, characterized the crime as senseless and merciless, emphasizing the tragedy of Brock being killed in the security of his own home.
