In the fall of 2016, the community of Bamberg, South Carolina, was shaken by the violent death of one of its own. Frank C. McNair, a 69-year-old local minister, was found deceased in his home on Spring Branch Road on October 1st. An investigation into his death revealed he had been fatally shot in the chest. The circumstances surrounding the discovery were further complicated by the presence of a woman at the scene who had also sustained gunshot wounds and was subsequently airlifted to a nearby
hospital for treatment.
As the Bamberg County Sheriff's Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division delved into the case, their investigation led them to a primary suspect. In a turn of events that likely stunned those who knew the family, McNair's own wife, Annie McNair, then 70 years old and a resident of Garden City, Georgia, was arrested in connection with the shooting. The arrest occurred the following month, on November 21, 2016.
Following her arrest, Annie McNair was charged with the murder of her husband. She was booked at the Bamberg County Detention Center to await legal proceedings. The charge of murder carried with it the potential for a severe sentence, ranging from a minimum of 30 years to life in prison, or even the death penalty. The investigation pieced together that Annie McNair was the one who had shot her husband on that fateful day in October.
