In the quiet community of Rineyville, Kentucky, a birthday celebration on June 26, 2023, turned into a scene of tragedy, ending the life of 37-year-old Ashley Henning, a Black woman and a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army. What began as a party for Ashley descended into a heated argument between her and her husband, Jordan Henning, who was also an active-duty military member.
The dispute escalated to the point that guests, after failing to calm the couple, began to leave the residence with the couple's children.
Shortly after the guests departed, neighbors heard multiple gunshots. They re-entered the home to a devastating sight: Ashley Henning was in the kitchen, having been shot several times in the chest. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The entire horrific event was captured on home security footage. The video showed Jordan Henning following his wife after the argument, a gunshot ringing out, and then reloading his handgun before shooting her again. In a final act of desecration, he was seen spitting on her body. Their children were in the home at the time of the shooting.
Jordan Henning fled the scene but was apprehended by law enforcement shortly after. He was initially charged with murder in connection with his wife's death. During the trial, his defense team argued that he was under 'extreme emotional disturbance.' Prosecutors, however, pointed to the chilling video evidence as proof of a cold-blooded act. The jury ultimately found Jordan Henning guilty of first-degree manslaughter, not murder.
Following the verdict, the jury recommended a sentence of 20 years in prison, the maximum for a Class B felony. The judge, citing the violent nature of the offense and the profound impact on the couple's three children who were present in the home, upheld the jury's recommendation. In May 2025, Jordan Henning was formally sentenced to serve 20 years for the killing of his wife, Ashley Henning, a decorated soldier who had served tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait.
